Canto General and popular Greek songs
The Greek Festival of Sydney returns to City Recital Hall for another huge festival finale. This year’s concert, conducted by George Ellis, celebrates the music of iconic Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, best known for his theme to Zorba the Greek. His work, both classical and popular, draws on the rich musical heritage of his homeland. Vocalists Livia Brash and Hayden Barrington combine with Sydney Philharmonia Choir to perform Theodorakis’ vibrant oratorio, Canto General. Performed in Spanish and based on Chilean Nobel-laureate Pablo Neruda’s book of poems, Canto General is an epic history of South America. The tempo rises in the concert’s second half as special guest, Greek vocalist Dimitris Basis performs laika tragoudia – ‘popular songs’ by Theodorakis, celebrating life and love.
