An exhibition of paintings by Lily Katakouzinos
Excavations
at the ancient site of Poliochni suggest the end was sudden and catastrophic.
The tremors that resonated from beyond the shores of Troy possibly sealed
the fate of this once thriving citadel. Poliochni's links were still with
the East but it also had close ties with the Aegean centres of culture,
namely the Cycladic islands. Sifting through layers of Lemnian earth,
like the archaeologist, Katakouzinos examines each fragment for evidence
of stories, singular and universal. Brushstrokes conceal, reveal and seek
out the delicate and fragile remains of another world. Side by side golden
brooches and earrings, terracotta vessels and the chalky residue of shells,
objects practical and ornamental, allude to a deep past within the present.
