Home Truths

Byron Comninos and Vasilis Natsis present an illusionary journey linking images with memories or fantasies that may be permanently 'burned' into the psyche of those of us who can never let go of Greece.

We may be travellers tourists; migrants or children of migrants - or simply dreamers or admirers of 'Greekness'. Images feed on nostalgia or fantasy and capture scenes or events that are caught in the corner of our vision and whose detail consciously - or subconsciously - transports us to Greece.

Background:

Vassili Natsis was born in Epirus - north western Greece, emigrated to Melbourne in the late fifties but returned to home soon after. In the seventies he was back, finally settling in Sydney. He is a graphic artist by trade but is now retired. Vassili's passion for drawing with pen and ink has seen him exhibit works on a number of occasions in both Sydney and Melbourne. He is also an amateur photographer and a member of the Inner West Photographic Club. Vassili and his family live in Marrickville.

Byron Comninos was born in Perth after his parents emigrated from Alexandria. In the late fifties they sold up and tried to settle in Athens. Post civil war Greece offered few economic opportunities however, and their dreams were soon abandoned. They returned to seek a new life in Sydney. Byron is passionate about sculpture and photography which he says helps him "to escape through the viewfinder of his camera". After meeting in 1974 and losing touch, he and Vassili were re-united quite by accident one morning when they discovered they lived in the same street.
Both Byron and Vassili share a comraderie through an affinity with their Greekness.
