According to Greek philosopher Epictetus (55 AD - 135 AD) our passions and desires for things that lie outside our control enslave us to changes in fortune. Real freedom lies entirely within us.

According to Epicurus (341 BC - 270 BC) real happiness consists in the pleasures of a simple life that result in tranquillity and freedom from anxiety. The Philosophy of Freedom explores the Hellenistic philosophy of Epicurus and Epictetus through a philosophical talk and performance of an original play by Edward Spence, Oracle of Light, followed by discussion.

"For so long the preserve of the lofty minded, philosophy is being gently coaxed back to the streets…and into theatres and pubs… Edward Spence wants it back where it belongs - among the people"
BRENDAN O'KEEFE, THE AUSTRALIAN, APRIL 2004.

"Philosophy, until a decade ago, was - too difficult and too dangerous for mass consumption….[according] to Edward Spence…. it is a respite, an oasis of peaceful contemplation on issues that burn in our minds and in our hearts"
LUKE SLATTERY, WEEKEND AUSTRALIAN, SEPTEMBER 2004.

"As Dr Spence says…people have always been interested in philosophical discussion. People have a need for meaningful discussion, for ideas that give meaning to our lives and help us live our lives"
ANGELA BENNIE, THE SYDNEY MAGAZINE, SEPTEMBER 2004.
