Zorba
was never actually in Paris as far as we know! And yet, in a sense, he was
born there! His creator, Nikos Kazantzakis, studied French at school in
Naxos and went to the French capital for postgraduate study in 1907-9.
It was the time when Picasso was in Paris and experimenting with
Cubism, Maeterlinck was publishing his Blue Bird and Parisians were
listening to the new music of Debussy. There the young Cretan attended the
lectures of the great philosopher Henri Bergson, whose thinking
Kazantzakis adopted in forming his own concept of God. We will recreate
the atmosphere of the Paris he knew through music, slides, brief talks,
and readings.
Participants include: Anastasia Anastasiadis, Litsa Diakovasili,
Kerrie
Grennan, Adam Hatzimanolis, Angeliki Hovaghimian, Adrian Kazas, Maria
Pender, Alfred Vincent and Zdenko Zlatar.
Language English, with summaries and some brief readings in Greek.
