Rembetika Crossroads
Musicologist
Gail Holst, author of the famed book, "The Road to Rembetika", and musicians
from the Melbourne Greek band Rembetiki explore the urban blues of Greece
known as Rembetika.
This unique form of music evolved amongst Greeks living
in Asia Minor who were displaced in the great "exchange" of Turkish and
Greek populations in 1922.
The migrants brought their eastern influenced
music and dance to the hashish dens and tavernas of Piraeus. This haunting
music of the marginalised underworld with its distinctive bouzouki strains
and vocal rhythms has survived juntas and war and the rise of Euro pop.
It is the defining music of contemporary Greek national identity and in
recent times has influenced music around the world.
