El Greco: The Life and Art of a Greek Migrant
A presentation by Professor Vrasidas Karalis

When Domenicos Theotokopoulos (1541-1614) left his native island of Crete at the age of 26, he became the most important migrant of Greek history whose work had a lasting impact on European artistic tradition.

His work developed into one of the most revolutionary and somehow radical visions of human sensibility and inaugurated a completely new style in painting which was to be creatively elaborated by the great artists of the 20th century.

The lecture will discuss El Greco's life and artistic legacy as the most important contribution of conquered Greece to the European civilisation.

Presented with the valuable assistance of the Modern Greek Department of the University of Sydney.
