HOMER DAY
AND THE FATE OF THE ILIAD IN EUROPEAN HISTORY
co-ordinated by Professor Vrasidas Karalis

The Iliad is not only the first ever European poem but also the most emblematic story of European history, a story indicating both exploration and expansion.

The heroes of the Iliad have remained to this day the most important symbols of moral virtues in European philosophy and express the curiosity, the endurance and the violence that we have seen dominating European history for the last 3000 years.

The presentation examines both the heroes and the gods of the Iliad and explores their many transfigurations in European art, literature and philosophy.

Presented with the valuable assistance of the Modern Greek Department of the University of Sydney.
