An event presented by the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis under the aegis of the 25th Greek Festival of Sydney

The Meaning of Life:
Nikos Kazantzakis and St. Francis of Assisi

Nikos Kazantzakis (1883-1957) is famous as the author of Zorba the Greek and The Last Temptation. But these form a tiny part of the output of this passionate thinker, who wanted to help us create our own purpose and meaning in life. One approach he adopted was to write about his gurus: Jesus, Buddha, Odysseus, and, of course, Zorba, the ordinary Greek who, he says, taught him "to love life and not fear death". Less well known, but no less topical, is his novel on St Francis, God's Pauper. But why St Francis? And what did the Cretan writer, with his Orthodox background, make of the Saint of Assisi?
