Nikos Kazantzakis and the Real Zorba
A presentation by Mrs. Anastasia Anastasiadou

"Zorba taught me to love life and not fear death." Kazantzakis is not talking here about the hero of his famous novel, Alexis Zorbas, but about Giorgis Zorbas, on whom he modelled the character in his book.

In 1916-17 Kazantzakis was involved with Giorgis in exploiting a lignite mine in Mani. The experience provided the inspiration for his novel, although there he placed the action in his home island, Crete.

But who was Giorgis Zorbas? And why did he have such an influence on Kazantzakis?

With the support of the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis (Sydney Branch) and the Panmesinian Association of NSW.
