Sidetrack Performance Group's
Seven Pirates

How Greeks first discovered Australia

In the summer of 1827, British authorities arrested seven young Greek sailors off the coast of Crete and charged them with piracy.

At their trial on Malta - before a jury of English, Maltese, Sicilian, French and Spanish - the Greeks admitted they had waylaid a British ship. They claimed they were engaged in a patriotic act, since the ship and its cargo of tin plates were bound for the Ottoman held Port of Alexandria.Convicted - three men receive the death sentence while the remaining four are given life sentences.

With the aid of their Maltese lawyer they appeal to King George IV for clemency. Within a year all seven find themselves on a boat bound for... Botany Bay.

Sidetrack's compelling new show mixes high seas action, comedy and edge of the seat courtroom drama to reconstruct one of the most bizarre stories from the golden age of piracy.
