Antigone - The Burial at Thebes
A Version Of Sophocles’ Play
By Seamus Heaney
The superb Deborah Mailman returns to Belvoir St Theatre to take on one the greatest roles in theatre.
Antigone is an ancient play about here and now. This recent version of Sophocles’ magnificent tragedy cuts to the core of one of the conundrums of the twenty-first century: how to balance the heart of the individual with the ever-shifting demands of the state.
In the quiet dawn after the end of the latest war, a daughter of the ruling household slips away to bury her traitor brother. By the end of the day, her simple act of love will have brought the state to its knees.
Acclaimed Melbourne director Chris Kohn, who enchanted Sydney audiences with his productions of The Black Swan of Trespass and The Eisteddfod, gives us a contemporary, deeply moving production of Sophocles’ great play.
Directed by Chris Kohn
Set & Costume Designer Dale Ferguson
Lighting Designer Luiz Pampolla
Sound Designer Jethro Woodward
With Katie Fitchett, Gillian Jones, Deborah Mailman, Pacharo Mzembe, Boris Radmilovich, James Saunders, Hazem Shammas and Paul Tassone
