A Photographic Exhibition by Nick Baldas

Atrium explores the ancient Greek idea of beauty, in its masculine and feminine forms.

Through the medium of photography, the masculine architectural beauty of the Acropolis is represented through intimate sepia-toned prints. These images act as sentinels to the atrium, which features a coloured photographic mosaic of a female Greek sculpture, symbolising the feminine.

Using the contemporary medium of photography to explore the ancient Greek styles of architecture and sculpture, Atrium endeavours to bring new life to the old world.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT FOR NICK BALDAS 2008

My art is a personal journey, each exhibition has a voice which I try and translate in each medium, may it be in photography, paint, mixed media or instillation. I am honored to be part of the Greek Festival 2008 with the exhibition ATRIUM, to have the opportunity to share me journey.

Since graduating from the National Art School of Australia having obtained a bachelor in Fine Arts –2001. I have had three major exhibitions which have toured through out New South Wales. I have also had numerous group exhibitions and supported charity benefits.

Exhibitions that toured New South Wales:

  • ‘SPEAKING THROUGH FLOWERS’. A black and white photographic exhibition that explored the sensuality, and sexuality of flowers. This was done in hope of creating awareness for AIDS and in support of the AIDS Trust of Australia. It was launched at the Sydney Opera House – 1997.
  • ‘KISS WITH PRIDE’. Also a black and white photographic exhibition. This time I explored the sensuality of a kiss between two people, showing that a kiss does not discriminate. Launched at the Sydney Lesbian and Gay PRIDE center- 1999.
  • ‘VOICE’. This was a performance launched at the Theatrette in Sydney’s Parliament House’. A colour photographic instillation in support of the Australian Conservation Foundation - 2004.

My most recent solo exhibition was titled PEACE and was launched on Australia Day 2008 at the Reagard Gallery in Darlington. This exhibition hoped to bring awareness and change in support of peace. It was supported by the United Nations Association of Australia and the Australian Misistry for Peace. 26-01-2008

I have also had numerous group exhibitions as both curator and artist. My next major exhibition will be at the Global Gallery in Paddington in September 2008. This will be a group photographic exhibition where I will be exhibiting and co-curating the exhibition.
