Mikis Theodorakis - Politics and Art
A Presentation by Associate Professor Vrasidas Karalis
This presentation examines the life and the work of the most important Greek composer of popular music in the 20th century. Through archival material, original footage of his concerts and his own testimonies, the presentation gives a comprehensive idea of his development as an artist and a political figure, discusses his influences on Greek music and politics and attempts an interpretation of his personality and aesthetics.
From Zorba the Greek to his grandiose operas, from his lyrical songs to his revolutionary anthems and from his experiments with sound to his ecclesiastical choral music, Theodorakis is both diverse and contradictory, a man and an artist of extremes whose presence is a testimony to the creative vitality of Greek culture and a manifestation of his unique individuality.
The lecture addresses these aspects of his work and pays tribute to his continuing influence.
