A talk by Literary Researcher Anastasia Anastasiadis, with readings

An evening of homage to a great poet from Zakynthos, 140 years after his death.

Andreas Kalvos is a poet of the Diaspora. Aged ten, he left home with his father for Italy. After traveling widely, he eventually settled in Kerkyra (Corfu), but emigrated again and spent his final years in England

Kalvos’ importance was only realised after his death. Kalvos used his pen to promote the Greek Revolution and its ideals. His collection of only twenty Odes was enough to establish him as a major poet. He developed a distinctive voice, with rich imagery and an original approach to language.

Death is sweet, only when we close our eyes,
in our own land.
