An exhibition of Greek masters and local artists -
Nola Diamantopoulos, Penelope Tsoutas, George Tsoutas.

Tourists from the ends of the earth visit Greece to bask in the sun, float in blue waters, be uplifted by the cloudless sky of the immortals, and sense the past in the redolent ruins. They go to experience the “spirit of place” that belongs to Greece alone. Not on the usual tourist track there, however, are the art galleries, and there is also little opportunity to see the work of contemporary Greek artists in Australia. The Greek Festival of Sydney and Art at Home Gallery are very proud to present the annual “Greek Masters Exhibition”. The exhibition includes great iconic artists who are household names in Greece. Works of Greek masters such as Fassianos, Mytaras, Sperantzas and Stathopoulos are kept in National Galleries. They enjoy great success at major auction houses in London and throughout Europe. But most Australians are unaware of this wealth of art. This year’s exhibition will be a mix of these established Greek artists, with local Australian talent with a Greek flavour.

In this series of photographs, which have a timelessness about them, George Tsoutas explores the disconnection that the subject has with their immediate environment, yet, still being part of it.

Penelope Tsoutas
Biography & Artist Statement

Penelope Tsoutas has always been passionate about anything visual, and her latest interest and experimentation with photography has resulted in a series of beautiful images that she has created in camera, at Tarbuck Bay, Smiths Lake., on the mid-north coast of NSW.

Penelope shot these images at dusk in low light, with the intention of creating a ghostly effect with the figures she has framed against the softness of the watery landscape that is silent and bewitching, so late in the day.

Her talent and love of watercolour painting can be clearly felt in these works, and she has endeavoured to mute the classic photographic clarity using camera movement and blur.

These images mark the kindling of a beautiful adventure for her into the world of photography and the arts.

Penelope showed rare and intriguing inspiration early in life, when having studied the work of Andy Goldsworthy she created a multitude of sculptures in nature in the playground at school. These were carefully documented by her parents, resulting in the publication of a book of her works,“Leaf Art” in 2001.She went on to create a very successful short film that gained first place in the 2005 NSW EdFest film competition in the intermediate category. In 2006 she was a finalist in the NSW Premier’s Award in Secondary Schools competition for design and technology with her design.

Penelope has recently been listed as a finalist in the prestigious 2009 Moran Contemporary Photographic Portrait prize - in the Secondary Schools section Yrs. 9-10, with work produced from this series of photographs.
