A presentation by Martyn Brown
In April 1944, thousands of Greek soldiers and sailors throughout the Middle East
engaged in political mutiny in support of the left wing Greek resistance movement. Britain and the Greek
government-in-exile responded with tactics of starvation and armed force.
Thus what was a largely peaceful
protest ended in death and imprisonment for the mutineers. The mutiny also contributed to the emergence
of an extreme right wing military group which influenced post-war Greek politics. This presentation will
discuss the mutiny and also its aftermath. Of special note is the little known involvement of the United
States and New Zealand in these events.
