A presentation by Vasilis Kolovos
Yannis Ritsos, the poet of the Greek people, of peace and of the working class, was persecuted, imprisoned, exiled and tortured more than any of his colleagues by the bourgeoisie of his own country. And now we find his line “We sing, my brother, to join with the world” is adopted by the class which hunted him down! Some people may be intending to deconstruct the militant aspect of his work by honouring him; but any such attempt will be in vain. Ritsos is now a national poet and no-one will ever be able to separate his poetical, his human and his militant stance.
Ritsos will always be present in those events which wounded and bloodied us, but which also gave us hope. Ritsos will always be present in the world.
