The Past, Present, and Future of Greek Community Theatre

A Presentation by Eleni Tsefala

For over sixty years, community theatre has offered entertainment and much more: it has served the community’s need to define its identity, to transmit language and culture to future generations, and to combat racism and all kinds of prejudice. But what does “community theatre” mean today? How does it address the present needs of its audience? Who are its audience and what are their needs? What is the effect of using English? Eleni Tsefala has worked in theatre, cinema and television, and is writing a thesis on bilingual Greek theatre in Australia. Her talk will be followed by discussion.
